Before traveling to India, it's essential to understand the entry requirements to ensure a smooth arrival. All international visitors must possess valid travel documents and meet specific criteria set by Indian immigration authorities.

Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in India.
  • It should contain at least 2 blank pages for immigration stamps.
  • Damaged or heavily worn passports may not be accepted, so ensure yours is in good condition.

Visa Requirements

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter India. The type of visa depends on the purpose of your visit:

Tourist Visa

For tourism, sightseeing, and visiting friends/family. Available as eVisa or traditional visa.

Business Visa

For business meetings, conferences, and trade activities. Requires invitation letter.

Medical Visa

For medical treatment in India. Requires medical documents and hospital confirmation.

Student Visa

For studying at Indian educational institutions. Requires admission letter.

Health Requirements

While India doesn't mandate specific vaccinations for most travelers, the following are recommended:

  • Hepatitis A and B: Recommended for all travelers
  • Typhoid: Especially if visiting smaller cities or rural areas
  • Tetanus: Ensure your vaccination is up to date
  • Yellow Fever: Required if arriving from yellow fever endemic countries
  • Malaria Prophylaxis: Recommended for certain regions
  • COVID-19: Check current requirements as they may change

Arrival Requirements

  • Return/Onward Ticket: Proof of departure from India
  • Sufficient Funds: Evidence of adequate financial means for your stay
  • Accommodation Details: Hotel bookings or host information
  • Travel Insurance: Highly recommended (may be required for some visa types)
  • India e-Arrival Card: Electronic form that must be filled in up to 72 hours before the trip

Customs Regulations

Duty-Free Allowances:

  • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco
  • 2 liters of alcoholic beverages
  • Personal effects and travel souvenirs

Prohibited Items:

  • Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances
  • Firearms and ammunition (without proper permits)
  • Counterfeit currency
  • Pornographic material
  • Endangered species and their products

Currency Regulations

  • Foreign currency exceeding $5,000 (or equivalent) must be declared
  • Indian currency exceeding ₹25,000 must be declared
